No doubt about it: P. J. O'Rourke has a bizarre sense of fun. "What I've ... been," he writes in his introduction to Holidays in Hell  "is a Trouble Tourist--going to see insurrections, stupidities, political crises, civil disturbances and other human folly because ... because it's fun." Forget Hawaii or the Poconos--O'Rourke gets his jollies in places like war-torn Lebanon where he is greeted at the border by a gun barrel in his face, or Seoul, just in time for election-day violence. Wherever he goes, however, O'Rourke takes his quirky sense of humor, laser eye for detail, and artful way with words: a Philippine army officer is "powerful-looking in a short, compressed way, like an attack hamster," and the Syrian army is described as having "dozens of silly hats, mostly berets in yellow, orange and shocking pink, but also tiny pillbox chapeaux.... The paratroopers wear shiny gold jumpsuits and crack commando units have skin-tight fatigues in a camouflage pattern of violet, peach, flesh tone and vermilion on a background of vivid purple. This must give excellent protective coloration in, say, a room full of Palm Beach divorcees in Lily Pulitzer dresses."

O'Rourke's flip, sarcastic style isn't for everyone, of course; the concept that anyone could find sightseeing in the Beirut or El Salvador of the 1980s fun might prove offensive to more than a few readers right off the bat. But love him or hate him, P. J. O'Rourke knows how to tell a good story, and if you like your travel writing laced with more than a little cynicism, Holidays in Hell could be just the book you've been looking for. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description
Now available from Grove Press, P. J. O'Rourke's classic, best-selling guided tour of the world's most desolate, dangerous, and desperate places. "Tired of making bad jokes" and believing that "the world outside seemed a much worse joke than anything I could conjure," P. J. O'Rourke traversed the globe on a fun-finding mission, investigating the way of life in the most desperate places on the planet, including Warsaw, Managua, and Belfast. The result is Holidays in Hell--a full-tilt, no-holds-barred romp through politics, culture, and ideology. P.J.'s adventures include storming student protesters' barricades with riot police in South Korea, interviewing Communist insurrectionists in the Philippines, and going undercover dressed in Arab garb in the Gaza Strip. He also takes a look at America's homegrown horrors as he braves the media frenzy surrounding the Reagan-Gorbachev summit in Washington D.C., uncovers the mortifying banality behind the white-bread kitsch of Jerry Falwell's Heritage USA, and survives the stultifying boredom of Harvard's 350th anniversary celebration. Packed with P.J.'s classic riffs on everything from Polish nightlife under communism to Third World driving tips, Holidays in Hell is one of the best-loved books by one of today's most celebrated humorists

Modern Manners is good, early O'Rourke, a book that you can read and enjoy without being to the right of Francisco Franco. Who can resist lines such as "A hat should be taken off when you greet a lady and left off for the rest of your life. Nothing looks more stupid than a hat." Or, "Don't wear a tweed jacket to work unless you expect to flush a covey of quail from behind the Xerox machine." Manners are a moving target, and some sections are in need of revision (cocaine really was a big deal, wasn't it?), but don't let that dissuade you. By and large, Modern Manners comes through admirably.
Product Description
A rule book for living in a world without rules, Modern Manners is an irreverent guide to anti-etiquette for the '90s and beyond. Pointed advice covers a range of topics from sex to death to reading habits. Also included are the most up-to-date forms of vulgarity and churlishness, as well as the latest fashion in discourtesy and barbarous display.

The politically incorrect O'Rourke will likely hit best-sellerdom again in this follow-up to Parliament of Whores ( LJ 6/1/91). The Gulf War, the death throes of communism, drug testing, the Middle East, and the Nicaraguan elections receive O'Rourke's often hilarious conservative/gonzo analysis, as seen in Rolling Stone , American Spectator , and other magazines. Somewhat less successful, because they border on the mean-spirited, are pieces on the Kennedys, the Carters, Lee Iacocca, and other liberal lights. Even if you reject his conclusions regarding these issues and individuals, you can't help but laugh at O'Rourke's deflating of some sacred cows along the way.

Paul Coughlin writes from a unique perspective: not only editor and author, he was the long-time host of a radio talk-show program which dealt with the issues of things like the 'New World Order, United Nations, End-Times Conspiracies, etc. at length. He weaves his experiences into an organized presentation that's easily understood and well-documented. Beyond that, however, he's a Christian who argues very persuasively that when Christians are seduced by these messages, they're missing the entire concept of Jesus and His Redemption.

Those interested in only the issues of Ruby Ridge, Oklahoma City and Waco (which he covers in a concise and relevant fashion, devoid of hyperbole or judgments) or of the NWO, UN, and the other host of conspiracies so popular on the internet and in 'pop' books, will find this book worthwhile reading. Christians with an open mind trying to resolve the many arguments presented by popular preachers who thrive on fear and hatred should find it very helpful in keeping perspective.

Few women in the past three decades have lit up the American imagination like Cybill Shepherd. From wholesome beauty queen to saucy cover girl, from heartbreaking movie star (The Last Picture Show) to one of television's most beloved comediennes (Moonlighting and Cybill),  she has imbued each of her roles--right down to her current passions as devoted mother of three, champion of women's issues, and sultry cabaret singer--with an indomitable spirit that has made her, at fifty, a female icon to an entire generation. Now in her much-anticipated memoir, she tells her remarkable story with humor, pathos, and more highlights than her famously blond hair. Cybill has absorbed the lessons of Southern womanhood, including the whispered message about sex: Wait until you're married, then you won't enjoy it, and certainly never speak of it. She gleefully disobeyed these and other rules of decorum in a career laced with controversy, featuring unforgettable cameos by Martin Scorsese, Peter Bogdanovich, Orson Welles, Robert De Niro, and Jeff Bridges. Whether stepping on Elvis's blue suede shoes or going toe-to-toe with Bruce Willis, Cybill has never held anything back, and it's all in Cybill Disobedience, including:

the night a network executive tried to barter thirteen episodes for a horizontal tour of Cybill's bedroom

why she'll never be invited back to Ryan O'Neal's beach house or Marlon Brando's island

the time she greeted David Letterman in nothing but a towel

the real reason two of television's most popular and acclaimed series, died premature deaths

how she made Richard Nixon blush for the first and only time in his life

From her Memphis roots to her insider's track in Hollywood, Cybill Shepherd is a woman who has weathered every onslaught and withstood every rebuke to emerge as a luminous model of endurance, courage, and an insatiable lust for life.

Hell's Angels
Signed First Edition hardcover
by THOMPSON, Hunter S

Edition: First Edition
Jacket condition: Very Good dust jacket
Book Description
London: Allen Lane/Penguin. 1967. The first British edition of Thompson's first book,
which he wrote after spending a year hanging out with (and getting beaten up by) members
of the famous motorcycle gang. One of the first examples of the participatory "gonzo"
journalism that Thompson perfected. Signed by the author ("H.S. Thompson"), with his
rubber stamp "Sexually Explicit Material" above the signature. With a full-page
multi-color drawing of Thompson by Ralph Steadman, with the caption "Don't Draw Hunter,
Aspen Chapter [of the Hell's Angels]." A near fine copy in a very good, rubbed dust
jacket with wear to the crown and a creased tear at the upper rear spine fold. Much
scarcer than the American edition: we suspect the hardcovers represent some sort of
edition for libraries or a trial publication and not an edition that was distributed
to the book trade in general. In custom clamshell case. . First Edition. hardcover

Months behind shooting schedule and millions over budget, would JAWS actually do well enough to make a profit? That was the question raised prior to the film's release, long before it became a box office juggernaut (the first film to earn over 100 million at the box office) and pop culture phenomenon. It is also the question that, more or less, closes this look at the hilariously chaotic and nightmarish shoot that was JAWS, for the book was written after filming had wrapped and before the finished product was unleashed on unsuspecting theatre goers. With no stars (Quint had yet to be cast), no script and no schedule, the production team from Universal took over the island of Martha's Vineyard to film the adaptation of Peter Benchley's best-selling shark thriller. Rather than a glossy studio backed 'Making of' book, Blake (who refers to herself as the Girl Photographer in the narrative) takes the outsider Islander few of the insanity that is movie making. The result is a more unvarnished look at the movie's production (though it is hard to tell one local from the other). Fans of Jaws will find this chapter on the production saga essential reading.
